~ Purchasing Manager Multinational Pulp & Paper Company
Multinational Pulp & Paper Company (SPP) had experienced a growing number of expensive emergency repairs and increasing downtime for equipment failure during recent years at their sprawling paper mill complex in Alabama. Their contracted maintenance provider was providing deficient maintenance which nearly led to breakdowns for several critical industrial machines. In addition, the control systems at the plant were showing their age and contributing to a higher cost of operations. SPP needed a maintenance provider who could quickly repair or replace the equipment while upgrading the controls system, lowering risk and costs for the company. They needed a service partner who could help them increase their production uptime and lower their cost of operations, securing the future for both the plant and the company.
Engineered Cooling Services had established a high-quality reputation with the plant since 2003 when they first began providing basic test and inspect services for the chillers. Because of the exceptional service and expertise Multinational Pulp & Paper Company saw in ECS, they approached ECS in 2010 to negotiate a long-term full service contract across the entire plant and facility. Since taking over the maintenance at the facility, emergency repair calls have dropped over 51% and continue to fall. Downtime has decreased dramatically at the plant, leading to more capacity and more output for SPP.
ECS immediately set out to fix the critical problems caused by years of substandard maintenance provided by the previous service companies. Many major components had to be replaced, which ECS did on schedule and on budget, with minimal impact to the plant’s operations. The remaining equipment was quickly repaired to optimal operating condition. The aging controls at the facility were also upgraded to a state-of-the-art Siemens© direct digital control (DDC) system, providing centralized operational command. ECS self-performs the controls work as a Siemens Solution Partner™, providing system optimization as part of the ongoing service agreement.
Since taking over the maintenance at the facility, emergency repair calls have dropped over 51% and continue to fall. Downtime has decreased dramatically at the plant, leading to more capacity and more output for SPP. ECS has 3 full-time staff dedicated to the facility and is on-call around the clock through a 24/7 emergency call line should an emergency arise at any time. Due to ECS’ success at the plant, SPP negotiated for ECS to take over services for two other facilities in the region. Both facilities have experienced results similar to the Alabama plant, seeing dramatic reductions in total operational cost, emergency repairs and downtime.
